Homemade and Healthy

At SFU, you can’t be a health sciences student and not be healthy. I remember we would eat healthy snacks and always talk about the good workout we had the other day. We were trying to be examples of our faculty but it’s hard work. Ever since I finished school, I lost my motivation and competition to continue to be that example.

So, I’m starting new and I started with this homemade shake.

Strawberry and Banana Shake

1 ripe banana (cut up)
5 strawberries (cut up)
1/2 cup of 2% milk or milk/substitute of your choice – yogourt is also a great ingredient

The strawberries we had were fresh but we froze them to prevent them from rotting. So since they were frozen, I didn’t need any ice. Also, no sugar! I don’t have much of a sweet tooth so for me, plain old fruit is enough. Add sugar to your taste but keep it light!

We have a Magic Bullet at home which is great for making single servings. It’s quick and simple and comes with screw caps so that you can store your shake for later. Stick ‘em all together in your mixer/blender and pulse until your desired consistency. Add more milk if needed.

The last step is to enjoy!

Fall

Fall is my favourite season of the year. For one thing, it’s cool which means warm layering (I’m a sucker for fall fashion). Another, fall colours are the best. And lastly, playing with fallen leaves is so much fun! Just ask Edrina.

I love those boots. They are the cutest.

One Month

It’s been about a month since I’ve been out of school and I already feel this urge to be back in the classroom. I love to learn so this routine of work then coming home to nothing is beginning to become difficult. So I decided to tackle learning outside of the classroom environment. I challenged myself to reading all (or most) of the books on the Radiolab virtual library list (I love the podcast). Last week I picked up The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat by Oliver Sacks. I’m keeping a small journal to jot down notes and I hope this keeps my learning mood in tact so that if/when I decide to go back to school, I haven’t lost my groove.

This book is amazing. I actually wrote a paper on similar ideas of the patient experience of health. As stressful as papers were, I’ll miss being able to gather all my thoughts into one giant piece of writing. But – that’s what a blog is for, right? :)

Birthday

That’s a picture of the birthday cake I had at work. I’ve celebrated 4 birthdays with them. Crazy.

Today, I am 22. It was a pretty routine day – nothing special. I had some cake with the coworkers and dinner with my dad. On Saturday I’ll celebrate with a joint party with my sister and the family.

I love my iPhone.

End of Summer

It’s been a crazy summer for me. I wanted to make sure that I ended my last semester of university on a high note – get the grades I wanted and have lots of fun. I’m proud to say that I was able to keep a social life while frantically finishing all my work. It certainly wasn’t the hardest semester (if I had to name one, it would probably be the one before) but it was still a lot of hard work. Right after my last exam, I jumped into fulltime work. That transition from student to fulltime employee has been fairly painless but I’ve been working at the lab for over three years so it’s just routine work – only every day of the week. I’m enjoying being able to come home and just do what I want instead of fretting over school work.

I’m not the only one going through change and transition. Many of my friends who have been studying out of the province came back for the summer but are now heading out for either work or post-grad education. We were able to get mostly everyone together for coffee and just sit and talk about what’s been going on with everyone and what our future plans are. Up until now we’ve categorized our lives according to what year of high school or university it was – now that most of our are out we joked about the next stage of our lives being jobs, marriage, children, and who knows. The walk home was rather bitter sweet. I hate to think of our lives as changing and pulling us apart but at the same time I remember that these are my best friends and we’ll always have each other in the end.

Someone Turned One!

It was Edrina’s 1st birthday party on Saturday.  The forecast called for rain but we were lucky enough to have the party before the rain started.  It was a nice small (relatively and in comparison to other Filipino parties) get together with family and some friends and everyone stuffed themselves silly with food.  Oh, there was lots of food.

My friend and I recently launched a food blog where we review restaurants in the Metro Vancouver area.  Check us out at Nom Nom de Plume dot com. We just started so it’s a little bare but it will fill out as we find more places to go to and figure out our groove.

End of Semester

I always feel like this during the last few weeks of a semester.  Classes officially ended on April 11th and since I only have one exam on the 19th, I’ve been feeling fairly relaxed.

Except for right now.  I’m waiting with an anxiety in my chest as I wait for the first game of the playoffs to start.

Go Canucks, go!

Spring is here

Now that it is getting sunnier, we can start taking Edrina to the park.  On the weekend, we went to the elementary school’s playground and practiced some walking.

I bought that hat for her in December.  It’s super cute but still a little too big.  But the bigness makes it looks even cuter!  It’s so hard to resist buying baby-related stuff.  If I could, I would buy all of Edrina’s clothes.

I’ve got a friend working on a new layout for me.  I am totally unskilled when it comes to these things and she has kindly offered to design it for free.  I specified how I wanted the layout to be photo friendly so that I could post bigger images.  Can’t wait to launch it!

Life as an Aunt

Life has been different now that there’s a little one in the family.  I used to be the baby of the family but with the birth of my niece, my role has changed from baby to big-responsible-baby.  I want to be there for my niece, my sister, and my brother-in-law on this journey of growing, developing, and learning.  It’s been a fun change, especially when she’s so cute and so much fun to be around.

I have this hilarious sequence of photos that follow this photo I took.  Essential, my photo gets the most adorable photo bomb ever.

Fearing for the safety of the camera, I quickly took it out of reach.  She’s cute but it’s hard to take photos of her now because of her curiosity.
